From my reading of this Wikipedia site I would define 'Social Networking' as a way of socialising electronically without having to leave the house. People of similar interests can communicate online at times when it is convenient for them to do so. They can develop a feeling of community, of which can be lacking in their real lives. The users can develop profiles of which they can manipulate to the degree of truth.....as Brad Paisley sings "I grow another foot and drop a bunch of weight every time I log in".

An online community can be the result of social networking. Once a group of like minded people start communicating, on a continual basis via the web, they can develop into a network or community based on interest. These interests can be for educational, professional or social purposes. Personally I have, so far, avoided using the online community of Face book. I took this stance for security reasons as the data exchanged would be available to the Web and being a teacher I could see the disadvantage of this happening. The times, they are a changing though...
